Our Feeding program

In the wild, hedgehogs mainly eat insects and small animals. They’re basically an omnivore, scavenging for things they can find and devour. I made it a point to say hedgehogs don’t eat veggies, fruits, and other plants because they eat the bugs and creatures that eat those so they still reap the benefits in a digestible form.

Here at AJ’s Lil Hedgies we don’t just feed cat food and try to stay away from hedgehog food, we try to give them a diet that reflects more of their natural diets. Our hedgies are fed a mix of 4 to 6 different cat/kitten kibbles along with live insects, frozen pinkies (baby mice), occasionally wet cat food, and soon we’re hoping to add quail eggs to their diet. Not only do these give them a variety, but it also helps provide the necessary nutrients and essential vitamins and minerals they wouldn’t get in a diet of all kibble. We also try to include probiotics to help give them a healthier digestive tract.

We do raise our own Superworms, Mealworms, and Dubia Roaches to feed. We bring other insects in through reliable feeder bug sources. We also raise our own mice to better keep an eye on what’s being fed to them and create safer food options for our hedgies.

If you’re ever looking for a pet mouse feel free to contact me because we usually have spares on hand LOL!
